Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD video presentation presents the principles, theory, and applications of symmetrical components for analyzing short circuits and fault currents in power systems in a clear, easy-to-understand format.

 

This course begins with an introduction to symmetrical components and their role in analyzing asymmetrical faults. It then covers sequence networks for balanced impedance loads, three-phase impedance loads, and transmission lines, along with power calculations in sequence networks. The sequence networks of major system components, including transformers and synchronous generators and motors, are also discussed. Thevenin equivalent circuits are reviewed and applied to determine the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence equivalents of transmission systems.

 

Also, this course then examines single line-to-ground, line-to-line, and double line-to-ground faults, as well as a simultaneous combination of two fault types. Fault currents and fault-induced voltages at the point of fault are calculated for each type. Three-phase faults are also discussed, including the calculation of fault currents.
