The Future of Food Waste Resource Harvesting
Course Highlights

This PDH live webinar presents the various forms of food waste management as a separated material. The Food Recovery Hiearcy of the USEPA is examined and its priorities are explained. An early success with yellow oil recycling is reviewed. This course provides comparisons of the chemical products and energy production results from the various means of degrading food waste. Then aerobic and anaerobic degredation are compared in terms of the gaseous products produced. The physical techniques and cros-sections of the three major types of aerobic and anaerobic degredation are explained. Then the advantages and disadvantages of each are compared. The most important advantages are extracted and summarized.

Next, the amount of energy that can be released in dry anaerobic degradation is discussed to point out that the amount of energy available to produce usable energy is greater than the amount of energy required to conduct the dry anaerobic degradation. Next the details of methane producing degradation are discussed. This includes the types of chemicals which predominate at each step and the four steps that result in methane gas: Hydrolysis, Acidogenesis, Acetogenesis and Methanogenesis. Next the parameters for supporting anaerobic biodegradation are reviewed, including: Temperature, Moisture, pH and Nutrients and Elements.

The details of how each parameter can support methane production are provided. The very important Carbon-Nitrogen ratio is detailed under the nutrients topic. The locations in the world where anaerobic degradation of food waste are occuring are reviewed. The biogas locations in several countries in Europe are given. A map showing the distribution of biogas facilities across the United States is presented. Then the anaerobic degradation projects in California are reviewed by type: dry digestion, high solids digestion, and wet digestion.

Finally, the conclusion is reviewed as to dry anaerobic digestion being the star degradation method. The advantages of this method are reviewed and summarized.

This 1 PDH live webinar is applicable to chemical, environmental, and civil engineers, as well as any specialty of engineering involved with food waste processing.

Learning Objectives

This P.Eng continuing education live webinar is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Learning about food waste requirements and opportunities
  • Understanding the three main modes of designed degradation
  • Knowing the details of each mode:
    • how it is accomplished
    • what resource demands and production occur
    • does it result in net energy production
  • Learning about the details of methanogenesis and its optimization
  • Understanding how food waste is already harnessed for energy production
How it works
