Steady-State Operation of Transmission Lines – Part 1 of 2

This engineering online CPD live webinar will establish, through slides and discussions, the general case of two-port electrical networks, and applies the insights gained from discussion of these to the study of transmission lines and their steady state operation. This webinar is Part 1 of a 2-part series.
The current webinar covers the operation of short-length, medium-length and long aerial transmission lines. The lumped parameter models of the short and medium length lines are developed, and the equations from distributed model of long transmission lines are given. The ABCD parameters of each type of line is presented and used in calculation of voltages and currents. The relationship between sending end voltages and currents are covered in detail, and examples of each are given, with solutions given and fully discussed for every step. Voltage regulation of lines is introduced and calculated in different examples. Power transfer between sending and receiving ends of each of the line types is covered. Transmission power loss is calculated for each scenario, and efficiency of transmission lines in transferring power to the load is found for various examples. Since calculation of the ABCD parameters of the long lines is dependent on sine and cosine hyperbolic of angles, a review of these two functions are also included.
This 2 CPD online live webinar is intended for electrical engineers, as well as design personnel who are interested in learning the fundamentals of transmission line operations.
This PE continuing education live webinar is designed to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Be able to mathematically model short, medium-length and long aerial transmission lines
- Develop the ABCD parameters of each line type, based on the theory of two-port electrical networks
- Given the parameters of the load on each of these types of lines, to calculate the power generating end’s voltage, current, power, and power factor.
- Calculate the line losses and the transmission line efficiency of transmitting power from generation to load
- Calculate the voltage drop and voltage regulation of the line, between the full-load operation and light or no-load operation of the line.
