The elementary AC generator consists of a conductor, or loop of wire in a magnetic field that is produced by an electromagnet. The two ends of the loop are connected to slip rings, and they are in contact with two brushes. When the loop rotates, it cuts magnetic lines of force, first in one direction and then the other.

Any device relying on magnetism or magnetic fields to operate is a form of inductor. Furthermore, there are many natural causes of capacitance in AC power circuits, such as transmission lines, fluorescent lighting, and computer monitors. Whenever inductive and capacitive components are used in an AC circuit, the calculation of their effects on the flow of current is important.

This course explores calculation of the fundamental electrical parameters of transmission lines. Equations for calculation of line series resistance, series inductance and shunt capacitance are presented and detailed application of the equations are included in the many examples that follow the theoretical points. These equations are based on the physical characteristics of aerial lines, such as conductor material, size, length and configuration.

 

This course covers in details a part of calculation of resistance of lines, the skin effect influence and changes of resistance with temperature. Shunt conductance is discussed as well as factors influencing this parameter and its effect on performance of transmission lines. Series inductance and inductive reactance of lines are calculated for many representative line configurations, including for the case of bundled conductors. Shunt capacitance and shunt admittance between lines and between line and neutral are calculated, and the results applied to multiple different configurations of lines, including for the case of bundle conductors. Effects of bundling on the line series inductance and shunt capacitance are demonstrated through appropriate numerical examples.
