Self-Driving Cars: What Can We Realistically Expect

COURSE NO: M04-042
PDH CREDIT: 4
COURSE PROVIDER: Mark Rossow, P.E.
Self-Driving Cars: What Can We Realistically Expect
Course Highlights

This engineering online PDH course will establish what can realistically be expected of self-driving cars (SDCs) in the next five to fifteen years.

Current SDC technology faces over a dozen challenges that have not yet been met.  The challenges include not just technical issues such as the adequacy of machine learning, software validation, hardware reliability, cybersecurity and the lack of adequate testing, but also non-technical issues such as public fears about SDCs’ lack of safety and questions of insurance and liability.  One possible future for SDCs would consist of slow, incremental improvements which may never achieve some of the radical changes in society that have been predicted in the media but nevertheless may result in the saving of lives of many people who would have otherwise perished in automobile accidents.

The 4 PDH online course is intended for civil, electrical, mechanical, transportation engineers and others concerned with the development of self-driving vehicles.
Learning Objectives

This P.Eng. continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Knowing the four questions that a human driver and an SDC must answer to drive successfully
  • Understanding the role of route maps, sensors, and software in SDC navigation
  • Being familiar with types of sensors
  • Defining “Operational Design Domain”
  • Applying SAE Standard J3016 (Levels of Automation) to various types of SDCs
  • Identifying the handoff problem, disengagements, fallback, and teleoperation
  • Knowing concerns related to the widespread use of SDCs
  • Being aware of the future of SDCS
