Manual of Surveying Instructions - Part 1
Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD course explores the surveying practices associated with cadastral surveying and the general plan of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS).

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the laws, regulations, and standards governing official surveys of Federal interest lands. It examines the framework for collecting, analyzing, and reporting survey measurements, including stellar, solar, and satellite observation methods used to establish the true meridian. This course also addresses the effects of meridian convergence and the Earth's curvature on survey measurements and positioning.

In addition, this course explores coordinate systems, map projections, apparent misclosure, and the relationship between geographic positions and plane coordinates. It discusses official Federal survey standards, statutory requirements, judicial interpretations, and fundamental geodetic surveying principles. This course further explains the authorization of official surveys, the application of geodetic computations, and the integration of technical surveying procedures with Federal land records management and performance objectives.

This 5 CPD online course is applicable to civil engineers, land surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about surveying instructions.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identifying the organizational structure and survey authority of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regarding Federal interest lands
  • Identifying stellar, solar, and satellite methods for determining the true meridian and understanding the treatment of meridional convergence and curvature
  • Analyzing the geometric effects of the PLSS datum on survey computations, including apparent misclosure and the proper use of latitudes and departures
  • Understanding the reporting standards for horizontal distances at mean ground elevation and the relationship between geographic positions and Grid Coordinate Systems
  • Summarizing the requirements of survey measurements and the statistical analysis of survey data within the context of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI)
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Manual of Surveying Instructions - Part 1”, which is based on the U.S. Department of the Interior, Publication No. BLM/WO/GI-09/010+9800, Chapters 1 and 2 of “Manual of Surveying Instructions: For the Survey of the Public Lands of the United States (2009)”.

Course Quiz
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of twenty-five (25) questions to earn 5 CPD credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
The minimum passing score is 70%. There is no time limit on the quiz, and you can take it multiple times until you pass at no additional cost.
Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.)
