COURSE NO: L07-001
PDH CREDIT: 7
COURSE PROVIDER: Elie Tawil, P.E., LEED AP
Soil Survey Manual - Part 3 of 3
Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD course examines the principles, terminology, and interpretive methods associated with the examination and description of soil profile features and soil conditions.

This course focuses on soil profile description methods, which are used to identify and describe pedogenic features such as concentrations, redoximorphic features, consistence, roots, pores, selected chemical properties, soil water, and soil temperature in support of soil evaluation and classification.

In addition, this course explores how soil morphological, chemical, and hydrologic characteristics are observed and interpreted in the field, requiring the use of appropriate terminology and descriptive methods to ensure consistency and reliability in soil descriptions.

This course covers the identification, description, and interpretation of soil profile features that are governed by pedogenic processes, field observation principles, and standard descriptive criteria, with information obtained through systematic examination of soil characteristics and conditions. It also emphasizes the practical use of these observations in soil interpretation, classification, and engineering evaluation.

This 7 CPD online course is applicable to civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineers, as well as other technical professionals involved in soil investigation, land evaluation, and site assessment.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding soil profile features and descriptive terminology used in soil investigations
  • Understanding the main soil characteristics and conditions observed in field descriptions
  • Applying general methods for describing and interpreting soil properties in the field
  • Recognizing the importance of soil water, soil temperature, and chemical properties in soil evaluation
  • Interpreting soil profile information for engineering, classification, and land assessment purposes
Course Document

In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Soil Survey Manual - Part 3 of 3”, which is based on Chapter 3 of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Soil Science Division Staff, Soil Survey Manual, USDA Handbook No. 18, (issued March 2017; minor amendments February 2018).
