Manual of Surveying Instructions - Part 2
Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD course examines the principles, procedures, and surveying practices associated with the system of rectangular surveys and monumentation.

This course explores the general framework of the PLSS, including the establishment and survey of principal meridians, base lines, standard parallels, and guide meridians, as well as the subdivision of townships and sections into aliquot parts and lots.

Moreover, this course covers the methods and standards used in official Federal surveys, including the rules governing the meandering of navigable waters and the legal significance of corner monuments. It covers monumentation procedures, the construction of special-purpose monuments, and the placement and documentation of corner accessories such as bearing trees, memorials, and stone mounds used to preserve boundary evidence.

In addition, this course explores official Federal survey standards, rectangular survey schemes, and the procedures used to establish, identify, and maintain legal land boundaries. It demonstrates how official surveys are executed, how legal subdivisions are defined, and how technical field practices support Federal land management, title security, and the effective operation of the public land tenure system based on established surveying principles and accepted professional practices.

This 8 CPD online course is applicable to civil engineers, land surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about rectangular surveys and monumentation.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Identifying the procedures for the subdivision of townships and sections, including the creation of aliquot part legal subdivisions, lots, and protraction diagrams
  • Explaining the rules for meandering navigable and meanderable waters along the Ordinary High Water Mark (OHWM) or Line of Mean High Tide (MHT)
  • Understanding the legal significance of corner monuments and the general requirements for their construction and monumentation material
  • Identifying special-purpose monuments and corner accessories, such as witness corners, reference monuments, and bearing trees, used to evidence corner positions
  • Applying the standardized system of marking to identify corner monuments and accessories using the appropriate letters and figures
