ISO Design Risk Playbook

This online engineering CPD course examines how ISO 9001:2015 quality management principles and risk-based thinking apply to engineering design projects managed through a gated (phase-gate) development process.
Design errors that are caught late are costly to correct, and some reach the field as failures that affect safety, compliance, and client confidence. A structured design process with planned reviews, documented decisions, and active risk management helps engineering teams identify problems early, when they are least expensive to resolve.
Each design phase brings its own risks and quality checks, from concept development through detailed design, testing, and release. Engineers need practical tools to identify, rate, and mitigate these risks, and a clear way to show that design inputs, outputs, verification, and validation are controlled and documented.
This course covers risk-based thinking, the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, documented information and traceability, risk registers, risk matrices, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Risk Priority Numbers (RPN), risk mitigation strategies, the five-phase gated design process, design reviews as control points, decision matrices, tolerance analysis, reliability calculations, and HAZOP and what-if analysis. It also includes discipline-specific examples from electrical, mechanical, civil, and environmental engineering projects.
This 1 CPD online course is applicable to electrical and mechanical, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about quality management and risk control in engineering design.
This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:
- Understanding risk-based thinking and its role in ISO 9001:2015 and engineering design
- Learning how to apply the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to design activities
- Familiarizing with documented information and traceability requirements for design projects
- Learning how to identify and assess design risks using risk registers, risk matrices, and FMEA
- Understanding how to calculate and use Risk Priority Numbers (RPN) to prioritize design actions
- Familiarizing with risk avoidance, reduction, transfer, and acceptance strategies
- Understanding the phases, tasks, and gate reviews of a gated design and development process
