Floodway Analysis and Mapping for Flood Risk Analysis and Mapping

COURSE NO: L06-006
PDH CREDIT: 6
COURSE PROVIDER: Gilbert Gedeon, P.E.
Floodway Analysis and Mapping for Flood Risk Analysis and Mapping
Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD course examines the principles associated with floodway analysis and mapping used in flood risk analysis and mapping projects.

This course focuses on the regulatory floodway and its importance in balancing development within the floodplain, including the legal basis and requirements for development. It describes one-dimensional and two-dimensional floodway analysis, covering initial encroachment screening, managing inflows, and surcharge validation using evaluation lines.

In addition, this course explores the core of real-world floodway management, hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, regulatory standards, and protection of natural floodplain functions. It explains how floodway delineations work, how to select the right modeling approaches, and how to align system design with performance goals, all rooted in real-world FEMA flood insurance studies.

This 6 CPD online course is applicable to civil engineers, surveyors, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about floodway analysis and mapping.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Understanding the definition of a regulatory floodway and its role in discharging the base flood without exceeding surcharge limits
  • Analyzing the differences between one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) floodway analysis, including the use of DxV screening and evaluation lines
  • Evaluating development proposals in the floodway to ensure they meet no-rise (zero-rise) criteria through appropriate hydraulic studies
  • Applying procedures for obtaining revisions to floodway boundaries, including conditional and physical map revisions (CLOMR/LOMR)
  • Identifying more restrictive state and local floodway standards and their precedence over minimum NFIP requirements
  • Managing the flood carrying capacity of altered or relocated watercourses to prevent cumulative increases in base flood elevations
Course Document
In this professional engineering CEU course, you need to review the course document titled, “Floodway Analysis and Mapping for Flood Risk Analysis and Mapping”, which is based on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Guidance Document No. 79, “Guidance for Flood Risk Analysis and Mapping: Floodway Analysis and Mapping”, issued in November 2023.

Course Quiz
Once you complete your course review, you need to take a multiple-choice quiz consisting of thirty (30) questions to earn 6 CPD credits. The quiz will be based on the entire document.
The minimum passing score is 70%. There is no time limit on the quiz, and you can take it multiple times until you pass at no additional cost.
Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the quiz, print your Certificate of Completion instantly. (Note: if you are paying by check or money order, you will be able to print it after we receive your payment.) For your convenience, we will also email it to you. Please note that you can log in to your account at any time to access and print your Certificate of Completion.
