Engineering Principles of Microbially Induced Corrosion

COURSE NO: T04-010
PDH CREDIT: 4
COURSE PROVIDER: Donald Parnell, P.E.
Engineering Principles of Microbially Induced Corrosion
Course Highlights

This online engineering CPD course examines microbially induced corrosion (MIC), its mechanisms, detection methods, and mitigation strategies.

MIC is a form of material degradation caused or accelerated by microorganisms and their interactions with metals and surrounding environments. MIC occurrence and severity vary with microbial activity, material properties, operating conditions, and environmental factors, affecting water and wastewater systems, oil and gas pipelines, marine structures, and industrial facilities.

This course covers the electrochemical and microbiological fundamentals of MIC, inspection and monitoring technologies, protective systems, mitigation methods, and lifecycle risk assessment. It also emphasizes practical engineering applications for detecting, controlling, and managing MIC.

This 4 CPD online course is applicable to civil and mechanical engineers, as well as other technical professionals who are interested in learning more about microbially induced corrosion.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with the electrochemical principles of metallic corrosion and the effects of microbial activity
  • Learning about the principal microorganisms associated with MIC and their degradation mechanisms
  • Understanding MIC vulnerability across various infrastructure systems and industrial facilities
  • Familiarizing with inspection and monitoring technologies used to detect MIC
  • Understanding the effectiveness of coatings, cathodic protection, biocides, and operational mitigation strategies
  • Learning how to apply lifecycle engineering principles to MIC risk assessment and asset management
