Effect of Material Properties on Reliability

COURSE NO: K03-006
PDH CREDIT: 3
Effect of Material Properties on Reliability
Course Highlights

This online engineering PDH course describes the forms of deterioration, the manner in which they affect reliability and how the users of this course might perform the activities needed to identify and address the various forms of deterioration over the entire life of the device.

Recently, there has been increasing interest in the impact of material characteristics on the reliability and useful life of assets, equipment, and components. While many material characteristics are amply considered when addressing the functionality of a device, reliability and useful life are largely dependent upon the forms of deterioration that affects those items.  Unfortunately, consideration of reliability and useful life are often considered only secondarily if at all.

Over the life of an asset, deterioration may occur in a number of ways.  Rather than fixing one’s response to deterioration only on those deterioration mechanisms identified during the design or early in the asset’s life, it is preferable to continue to remain aware and responsive to developing forms of deterioration for the entire life of the asset.

This 3 PDH online course is applicable to engineers who are interested to know how to manage deterioration over the life of an asset.

Learning Objectives

This PE continuing education course is intended to provide you with the following specific knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarizing with the different deterioration mechanisms
  • Gaining an overview on the phases in the lifecycle and how to identify and respond to forms of deterioration during each phase
  • Learning about all the various forms of deterioration that can impact reliability and asset life span
  • Providing examples of unusual situations where unexpected forms of deterioration were present and unexpected or ineffective solutions were applied
  • Forming a fully wholistic view of the performance of an asset as it may be adversely affected by poor reliability or shortened life and the on-going vigilance needed to avoid a myopic point of view
